I would recommend Digital SLR over High end Point and Shoot.Even cheapest Digital SLR can take far better picture than best point & shoot.I would suggest Nikon D3000 or Canon Rebel XS which not too expensive.

Petzl makes solid gear, I have used them for the last fifteen years or so, without complaint. For comfort, and function, I prefer the single band, aaa battery lamps, and I you really love him, get him one with 4 LEDS, I find the three LED lights to be lacking.

This particular lens is decent, however does leave something lacking. It is a general-purpose lens, it is most definitely not a macro lens though. You can shoot anything from portraits to scenery, but keep in mind that with an aperature of 3.5-5.6, you do not have a lot of flexibility in shooting conditions. Generally, you will want to shoot in brighter conditions if you don't wish to use the flash.
Honestly, i would recommend getting getting even Canon's 50mm f1.8 lens. The quality is excellent, and the price is quite low. It is a very sought-after lens.

Inspecting on top-rope is fine, but claiming an ascent on top-rope is just ethically unsound no matter who you are. Kehl did make a ground-up ascent, just not an onsight. I’m not the best climber around (F6c/7a) but I’ve never claimed an ascent of a route I’ve only toproped. If the landing is dodgy, that should be reflected in the grade as a bold ascent. BTW, the “Asshole” comment was left in response to some jerk-off spammer, whose comment has since been removed.

If I was going to explore drainage pipes, I would want a Miner's Headlamp.
They are bright, and can be used for 14 (Primary) to 40 (Auxiliary) hours. They are also explosion proof, in case you run into Methane Gas in the drainage pipes.

The 105mm micro will give better results by far. You'll probably get better images, other then a micro lens, if you forget the filter and use the lens at 55mm and closest focusing distance then crop the image with software.
