I agree with Cody…I've seen people use these newer style crampons and have not heard of any problems.
If you're worried about it, then buy an old-style crampon from SMC with neoprene straps.
Petzl makes solid gear, I have used them for the last fifteen years or so, without complaint. For comfort, and function, I prefer the single band, aaa battery lamps, and I you really love him, get him one with 4 LEDS, I find the three LED lights to be lacking.

That is a perfectly acceptable camera, especially if you like NIkon already. But you should also check out the XTi or for a little more money the 30d and the new 40d by canon
