As an amateur astronomer, I like the prop telescope. I have an 8" Meade Schmidt Cassegrain telescope that I use.
was one of the first distributed computing projects – where computers not in use by their operators could be used for data crunching efforts like sifting through signals captured by telescopes. Thanks to a TED Prize to its Director, the SETI Institute has recently started setiQuest, a crowdsourcing effort to boost the capacity of SETI [...]
Both are reflecting telescopes. A Newtonian uses a flat secondary mirror at a 45° angle to deflect the image to the side of the telescope tube. A Cassegrain uses a convex secondary to deflect the image back down the tube and through a hole in te primary mirror. The convex secondary in a Cassegrain increases the magnification of the telescope by increasing the focal length.
Amateur astronomers and the merely curious gather in the inky darkness above the Palomar Observatory in northern San Diego County to gaze upon heavenly bodies.
It’s not the kind of gear you’ll see lying around any old campground on a Saturday: a 10-inch Meade LX200-ACF telescope with a GPS receiver and Smart Drive; a Carbon Fiber Schmidt-Cassegrain with an 80ED refractor hard-wired to a laptop for precision imaging; and a 300-pound, 25-inch Newtonian scope perched on a Dobsonian equatorial platform with a kid-friendly stepladder.
yay daddy!
trust me alot!
“The Griffith Observatory is already one of L.A.’s great landmarks. But now, it’s getting recognition — for its ornate ceiling. Virtualtourist.com named the observatory’s Central Rotunda as one of “the World’s Top 10 Greatest Ceilings.” “Designed by Hollywood art director turned muralist Hugo Ballin, the subtle, circular painting depicts the signs of the zodiac and other celestial beings,” the travel site said. “An interesting side note: Ballin was a sketch artist on the film ‘The Wizard of Oz,’ which might explain the ceiling’s whimsical look.” The website also honored Macy’s Department Store in Chicago and Grand Central Station in New York. “We appreciate astronomically this recognition of Griffith Observatory’s singular Ballin murals,” observatory Director Edwin C. Krupp told City News Service. “They operate at the conjunction of astronomy and arts, and there is nothing like them anywhere else in the solar system.”"
Mostly to get beyond atmospheric distortion; but with some scopes it has to do with the frequency of radiation being sought….like gamma radiation… which is readily absorbed or scattered by the athosphere.
Hey man, listen if u'r not serious abt astronomy,or is a beginner
my advise is don't waste the money.
if u are a beginner its much easier to use binoculars. If you don’t know the sky, you'll have a hard time setting up the telescope and aimming at things.
a binocular and a star chart would be enough to get u started.with a good binocular u can see lunar features, Jupiter’s moons, star clusters, nebulas.
but if u really want a telescope try these

Orion SkyView Pro 120 EQ
Celestron C130-Mak GT Maksutov-Cassegrain
Any suggestions for a high powered telescope that is t-ring compatible (for DSLR) AND is tough and light enough for backpacking and camping? I’m thinking 40 lbs max.
I’ve been searching around but the terminology is so varied it’s tough to nail down. I’m looking here at Oceanside Photo and Telescope, but I don’t even know where to start. Schmidt-Cassegrain Telescopes? Corrected Dall-Kirkham (CDK) Telescopes?
Please hope me, and thanks in advance!
Happy stargazing!
I’m new to all of this astronomy and telescope stuff. Which are the top 3 telescope manufacturers?

Nobody has ever been converted by a wall of text.
Hi. The type of optics do not matter as much as the tracking. I have a Meade Schmidt-Newtonion with a 6" mirror but excellent powered tracking. Exoplanets? Not in your budget (or at least not in mine!).
Left to Right: Dr. Ed Krupp, director of the Giffith Observatory and a science judge; Sharanelle Clark, Hitachi…
What I want is an 8" Newtonian Reflector. Or a Schmidt-Cassegrain. Woe is me. Still cheaper than a DSLR though.
Good catch! I’ll see about fixing that.

#10: Celestron AC Adapter for use with all Celestron computerized telescopes.
I have a 5.1 inch reflector too! And yea You can see it at that mag! But I say try higher mag! A 5.1 inch scope can go as high as 250x mag!(Mine goes up to 307x!
but I doubt I’ll get to that mag unless My sky is really clear and dark! And unpolluted! too much light! I did that one time and what a difference from a light polluted area! And at 120x! thats the mag I look at jupiter at! thru the 5.1 inch it looks amazing! So does saturn! and right now mars! I just saw it awhile ago!
GODBLESS CREATION RECORDS!!!
What do you want to know about telescopes? Their history, how to make one, how they work? Are you interested in a particular type of telescope? What school level – 9th grade, 12th grade, college, graduate school?
Now up is Dr Lee boon-ying, Director, Hong Kong Observatory, Hong Kong – weather information provider. #fghk
great
Is this a Synta Mak-Cass (common brand names are Orion and SkyWatcher)? If so, there is probably a way of doing it, but it involves a fairly specialized adapter. I have friends who have done this with the Orion 127mm Mak-Cass. It was discussed on the Yahoo Group devoted to these scopes, which I no longer belong to.
Optical telescopes are built as high as practically possible in order to clear as much as we can of the Earth's atmosphere, which inhibits viewing. I guess by radio telescopes you mean something like Arecibo. The reason that was built right there was the surrounding hills can be used like pylons to help support such a massive structure. As someone else said, probably a majority are built on normal, flat ground, where it is easier to build series of smaller 'scopes which are then phased together to form a Very Large Array as they are called.

Another piece of JAZZ from the CULT!
Does anyone but a Roman Catholic really care what the CULT comes up with??
I esca[ped because I saw too much…their catechism also admits that they worship the same god as the muslims! (Proof on file.)

what kind of telescope is that? im looking to get my first and not sure what kind to get please help?
No matter how obvious the problem becomes, there will always be deniers. They could be up to their necks in water and swear we need rain.
You’re an idiot.

Yes…
This design is very popular with consumer telescope manufacturers because it combines easy to manufacture spherical optical surfaces to create an instrument with the long focal length of a refracting telescope with the lower cost per aperture of a reflecting telescope. The compact design makes it very portable for its given aperture, which adds to its marketability. Their high f-ratio means they are not a wide field telescope like their Schmidt camera predecessor but they are good for more narrow field deep sky and planetary viewing.
Actually, for the money the Dobsonian is the winner for a cheap, large aperture telescope.
